Magnetic Maintenance
11.11.2022

Aleksandr Shestakov, Magnetic MRO Basic Mechanic (MECH 3), has been working in Magnetic MRO since the very beginning! Before becoming Base Maintenance Basic Mechanic, Aleksandr worked as a Production Planner for 28 years. What changed while changing his position and what are his key goals now? Read the interview to find out.

How did your aviation career start? What was your experience prior to joining Magnetic MRO?

After finishing basic school, I entered the Riga Aviation Institute for an avionic speciality in 1977. Graduated from the institute in 1983 and was sent to work at the Tallinn Airport maintenance organization.

I have been working here since that time, although the company has changed its status, owners and name several times. Now Magnetic MRO is an independent company, but earlier, it was part of the general aviation complex in Estonia.

Before I joined the planning department in 1994, I worked as an avionics engineer and avionics workshop manager for testing and repair of the avionics equipment. From 1994 until October 2022, I worked in a production planner position, which was established per the new maintenance organization chart of the Estonian Air company.

What changed while changing your position?

At the moment, I can't say much about the new position because it's been too short time since I came to Base Maintenance. I'm watching the working process of the other technicians and trying to re-establish my old skills. It won't be easy considering such a big interruption and my age. But the new position will definitely require a combination of computer work and physical work on aircraft.

What are the main challenges in your line of work now?

The main challenge now is to transfer theoretical knowledge of the aircraft into practical and adapt to modern aircraft maintenance requirements. A lot of things will have to start almost from "zero". It is also very important to become a part of the new team.

What are your key goals in your work?

Since the new job is a big challenge for me, many familiar things will have to be changed. First of all, there is a need to get practical experience in electrical standard practices procedures to be ready to do basic works for MECH 3 level, further to try to continue expanding the knowledge and experience. So, the main goal of my work in the short term is to gain respect from my colleagues and get a sufficient qualification.

Besides work, what are your hobbies?

I enjoy doing different kinds of sports. I have good skills in various sports, but the main one is football. I finished football sports school in Ukraine and played in Riga and Tallinn Championships. I was very proud to win several tournaments with the Magnetic MRO (Estonian Air, AME) team. In one of them, I got the prize of the best defender of the tournament. Also, I like to travel by car with my family, but it's always nice to come home after a trip.
